We are soon going to celebrate our 70th Independence Day. All of us must have plans on how to celebrate that day. Most of us will meet our friends, drink some coffee (dry day you know!), take selfies with pouts or maybe with friends, update pictures on Facebook and Instagram with flags, tri-color clothes or an almost blinding 'Ujala supereme' white kurta-pyjama with aviators- cool! Some of us would just want to be left alone and sleep all day with DND hanging on our doorknobs, after all God heard all your prayers, what else gives you a bonanza of 'Independence Day' falling on a Monday! Then there's a majority of people like me who like watching some good patriotic movie. That one patriotic movie that we watch keeps us pumped for another two weeks or so. After all watching a movie is much easier than doing something really patriotic.
No I am not a fool asking you take a bullet or two like our freedom fighters did, everyone is not born a LION! No I am not asking you to go on hunger strikes or candle light marches - no that's not gonna help.
Just to give it a thought....what else can make you patriotic without going overboard 'a practical patriot'. How about educating a child or creating a protective environment for girls. How about taking up politics as a career and for God's sake stop being a Keyboard Warrior fanning political issues virtually.
It is time that we realize that cricket is not a religion and cricketers are not Gods, there are better sports person who are fighting hard for a normal daily life.
It is time we stop being religious bigots and accept that if something is wrong it is wrong, no matter what religious dogmas says. Its time to say no to religious conversions.
It is time we stop carrying our 'Regionalism' everywhere we go and stop calling all South Indians 'Madrasi' and all North-East Indians 'Chinki' and all North Indians 'loud or rowdy'. No, not every Bihari is an uneducated, gutka chewing abductor nor does every Muslim want to go to Pakistan. It's time to stop making Santa-Banta jokes on your Sardar friends.
It is time we come out of our infinite Hypocrisies and change our society - where a Porn Star is celebrated and a rape victim is not even accepted as a person. Where a girl has the freedom to pick her favorite ice cream but is not free to choose her husband.
A society where people would accept eating a certain kind of meat in the name of secular harmony(bigotry) and would wear fur coats and carry leather jackets in the after parties of these kind of conventions.
Where a child has to live under constant fears. Where a child has to be taught about 'good touch' and 'bad touch' before learning to carve out imaginative figures in the clouds. What should kids be more scared of exam syllabus or molesters around.
A society where forests are cleared and cities are dying in the name of urbanization. People kill each other for water.
We need to change the stories around us. Stories where a woman is married to five brothers because of the horrendous shift in gender ratio. Stories where girls have to prove their chastity before marriage. Stories where elders are thrown away in old age homes or are murdered for personal gains.
We need to say 'NO' to paid media. No, not every death and suffering is a breaking news.
Its time to speak against the societies where you thrive on the taxes paid by fellow Indians but still want freedom from India. Double faced societies where you organize Cocktail parties to raise funds to help children suffering from alcohol abuse. Societies where you have five hundred friends on Facebook but don't know your next door neighbors.
Its time to change the system where it took thirty-two years for a freedom fighter to prove in court that he was a freedom fighter. A system where bribing is so deep in our roots that not only the corrupt ones want it even parents bribe their kids to perform well in exams. A system where the newly wed bride is expected to cook-clean-care-repeat forever but is never consulted over family issues, no matter how highly educated she is or has a great job. A system where your maid works seven days a week for you without expecting any leaves or holidays, be it any festival. A system where movies on serious topics are censored but a party song with barely clad girls is cool. A system where people have to fight for their freedom of expression whereas it is totally cool to send 'Talaq' over mail. A system where people can do anything and everything for political mileage. A system where you never end up landing in jail if you have money and good political connections. A system where speaking against your nation is considered cool.
Are you still pondering over a reason to change?
